Five Star uses a step-down transformer (110V AC to 12V DC adapter) to run FD8088 on just 12 Watts of power. This might solve some of the arcing and pitting issues of the old electrostatics. The adapter is included with the air cleaner.
FS8088 has a two-speed fan capable of pushing 40 cubic feet of air per minute (3.6 cubic meters/min) past the electrostatic dust collector.
While user reviews say the fan is quiet, with published noise levels less than 48 dBA, the airflow is too light to do much real cleaning.

Pretty good product, it is quiet until time to clean and then is gets just a little noisy. Very easy to clean. Although with smokers in my house we have to clean every two weeks rather than every month. I have one in my bedroom and the other in my living room.

To sum it up in a few words, the FIVE STAR FS8088 Ionic Air Purifier with UV-C is very handy and can be moved around the household very easy.
The futuristic UV filtration technique makes getting rid of airborne contaminants. The air purifier is easy to clean and maintain but may require it once per week.
It can only purify a small room up to 150 sq. ft., and doesn’t use a TRUE HEPA filter. A true HEPA filter is certified to remove 99.97% of pollutants as small as 0.3 microns and captures them into the filter.
This air purifier claims to remove contaminants as small as 0.01 from the air, however not all of the particles are collected onto the electrostatic plate.
Some toxins fall to the ground, remain there, and can be kicked back up into the air again.
Many customers have had problems with the unit breaking down after a few months or not having a strong enough fan.
